Note: This is for the August 12th meeting, but some preparation is necessary. Please read carefully and follow instructions.
Rag Basket Supply List:
First, decide what size you want to make, sizes are:
Mini is 4” h X 4” w
Medium is 7” h X 5-1/2” w
Large is 9” h X 6” w
Next, decide what color you want to make it. You can use a jelly roll if you prefer. One jelly roll will make 1 mini, 1 medium and 1 large basket. If you want your basket in a specific color scheme, you can purchase fabric and cut your own strips. For a scrappy basket, cut 2-1/2” strips from your stash using a variety of fabrics.
Fabrics:
Mini: ½ yd. total of assorted coordinated fabric – cut 7 strips 2-1/2” w X WOF*
9 yards of 3/16” or 7/32” cotton clothesline (or piping cord)
Medium: 1 yd. total of assorted coordinating fabric – cut 12 strips 2-1/2” w X WOF*
14 yards of 3/16” or 7/32” cotton clothesline (or piping cord)
Large: 1-1/2 yards of assorted coordinating fabric – cut 20 strips 2-1/2” w X WOF*
24 yards of 3/16” or 7/32” cotton clothesline (or piping cord)
WOF = Width of Fabric
For all baskets: (supplies)
90/14 size needle
Thread to match your fabric or variegated – 40 weight (Guterman makes this, but the thread police won’t come after you if you use something else. This is just a little stronger).
Sewing Machine and sewing supplies
Walking foot
Zigzag foot
Beads (opt.) You can use beads or buttons to embellish your basket.
After you get all your strips cut, cut off the selvages and sew your strips together end to end with a diagonal seam. (Save the last strip for later. Do not sew it on.) The first strips will be the bottom and the last strips will be the top.
To help move things along, it would be great if you could take this long strip, fold it in half wrong sides together and iron. Open up and press raw edges to the center and press. Re-fold and press flat.
You are good to go!!! We’ll do the rest when you get to the Guild Meeting. See you then! /Ruthann
